Substance abuse, including the misuse of alcohol, drugs, and other psychoactive substances, is a growing concern among youth in Nigeria, particularly in Bauchi State. The prevalence of substance abuse is often linked to various social, economic, and psychological factors, with youth in impoverished or conflict-affected areas being particularly vulnerable. Substance abuse is known to have significant negative effects on mental health, leading to conditions such as anxiety, depression, and psychosis (Musa et al., 2025).
In Bauchi State, factors such as peer pressure, family dysfunction, and lack of educational opportunities have been associated with higher rates of substance use among young people. This study investigates the impact of substance abuse on the mental health of youth in Bauchi State, focusing on how addiction contributes to psychological distress and other mental health issues.
Substance abuse among youths in Bauchi State is a serious issue, contributing to mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and increased susceptibility to violence and social instability. While the impact of substance abuse on physical health is widely recognized, its psychological effects, particularly among youth, have not been extensively studied in this region. This study seeks to investigate the relationship between substance abuse and mental health problems among youth in Bauchi State.
This study will focus on youths aged 15-30 years in Bauchi State, examining the relationship between substance abuse and mental health outcomes. Limitations include the challenge of obtaining accurate self-report data on substance abuse and mental health issues, and potential cultural barriers to discussing substance use and mental health openly.
